HANDPAINTED PHOTOGRAPHY

Camden Harbor

“I love the process! Each time I apply the color, I reenter the scene and can create perhaps a more ideal landscape or reality than the one I experienced when first making the picture.”
(Liv Kristin Robinson)

Testimony

“Her handcolored photographs...are remarkable
for their composition and vibrant color”“Liv Kristin Robinson uses a variety of photographic techniques to present well known...scenes from a new perspective and unfamiliar landscapes in a way which makes the viewer feel as if he or she has always known them.” (Republican Journal)

Misty Mountain

“Liv Kristin Robinson evokes the traditions of French Impressionism.” (Milwaukee Journal 1983)

Reflection

“The series of Beach views are very beautiful and strongly communicate a sense of place.” (Waldo Independent)

Crescent Beach

Haystacks

“Memories are made in Liv Kristin Robinson's Photography: Much of Robinson's work is concerned with man's interaction with nature. There are plays of light laced with greens of spring grasses and the pink of Cape Cod iris.”

Swans II

“What she does is atypical of other artists pursuing handcolored photography...Robinson adds color only to enhance. Look once and you,d swear the color was there all along... Robinson's impressionistic tendencies have found a way to the surface.” (Waldo Independent 2/11/88)

Technique:

“How do I handpainted photographs? I use essentially the same materials and techniques that were used before color film was perfected in the 1950's. First an archival enlargement is made using a matte surface, fibre-based paper. The final print is then toned and dried before applying Marshall's Photo oils.” (Liv Kristin Robinson)

“The handcoloring of the images is refreshingly restrained...The colors give the image a timeless quality, as if the photo was rescued from some ancient family photo album.” (Rebublican Journal 3/17/89)
